FEAST OF ALL SAINTS
Because November 1 falls on Monday this year, the Feast of All Saints is not a Holy Day of Obligation. Mass will be celebrated as usual at 12:05 PM in the lower Church.
CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
Next Sunday’s Special Collection, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), works to uphold the dignity of human life by breaking the cycle of poverty across the U.S. through grants to local community-based groups who create jobs, improve education, and strengthen neighborhoods. 25% of the CCHD collection stays in the Archdiocese of Boston to fund local anti-poverty projects; 75% supports national grant and education programs. For more information, please visit www.usccb.org/cchd.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS
Our CCD year has begun with catechists who are devoted to bringing the gospel to our students. Our Lord has called them and they have responded in love. He never forgets the smallest gift we offer to Him.
All CCD classes will celebrate All Saints Day this week. These people we call saints are those who have freely committed their life to God to allow Him to make them holy. The saints we celebrate were not perfect but were ordinary people who rose above personal adversity by grace and now have become role models for us on how to love God and neighbor. They are now in heaven praying for us and cheering us on, to be with them in heaven and happy forever!
Beginning this Sunday, Oct 31st and on Tuesday, Nov. 2nd, Religious Education classes will include a personal safety lesson for grades 1-8 provided by the Office of Child Advocacy by the Boston Archdiocese. These lessons will take approximately 4-5 weeks depending on the grade level. An overview of these lessons was made available to parents at the beginning of this year. However, if you have any questions, please feel free to call the Religious Education office at 617-969-4031.

FOR THOSE SEARCHING FOR A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THE FAITH,
CONTINUING EDUCATION, LIKE MARRIAGE, ENDS WITH DEATH
It’s true in medicine, it’s true in law, it’s true in technology. What is so true? – Continuing education in the vast knowledge explosion which defines our times! It is also true for our Catholic people with regard to their faith. It is so important that we grow in understanding of the great truths about God and His Christ which make up our Catholic Christian faith. By continuing education I mean growing in knowledge and in truth until four days after we’re buried. Readers of the bulletin (the regular readership is now up to twenty-one) will notice a new feature in our weekly bulletin. It is entitled “Growing Our Faith”. This section of the bulletin will alert us to lectures and other opportunities so available in our area for growing our faith. These are critical times for the Church. In more tranquil times things could be different, but, in the uncommon turmoil of our times, only intelligent faith can prevail. Recently, I was engaged in a conversation with a member of our parish who was sadly telling me of a friend whose knowledge of the faith is really not very good. Yet on the basis of what’s in the pop culture of our day, in conflict with our Catholic faith, this friend has ceased the practice of her faith. The parishioner who was talking to me about this matter made the comment – “Poor initial education from the Church and poor access for adults to continued education have prevented most of us from being well-informed Catholics.”
MEANWHILE, would some in the parish enjoy meeting with me one evening a week? We could explore the Creed together. We could talk about the Second Vatican Council, now forty-eight years old, and discuss some of the issues that have come to the surface since that important period of 1962-1965 – the dates of Vatican II. We could study the theology of St. Paul. We could discuss the mysteries of amazing grace. We could engage in conversation about issues of faith and reason, nature and grace, church and state, religion and society. We could talk about how to structure an interior life that takes seriously God’s call to holiness of life. Anybody interested? Call me at the rectory, send me an e-mail, grab me at the Coffee Hour and believe it or not, we can have a lot of fun.

WINTER CLOTHES COLLECTION FOR THE HOMELESS
As the cold weather of late fall and winter approaches, the agencies that serve the homeless are in need for warm jackets/coats and jeans for their clients. We at Sacred Heart will conduct a WINTER CLOTHES COLLECTION on the weekends of November 6/7 and 13/14. We are collecting used jeans and warm outer clothes for adults. Bring them to the church and leave them in the front foyer in the baskets provided. The clothes will be sent to St. Francis House in Boston. This is a great chance to sort through your winter clothes and look for items you no longer need or use. Your donation will be of great benefit to someone on a cold January night.

SIGNINGS
Sometimes we take things in only half way. At times a person starts to tell us some news and we are shocked by it, or excited by it, overwhelmed by it, or terrified by it. Our eyes might pop out of our head, we might blow up and lose our self control. We might sit there and feel white and blank. When this happens we might miss part of the message. Sometimes there is part of the message that is important that we miss and we find out later that we were wrong about the news in the first place.
There is a message in the first reading and the Gospel today and we need to be patient and listen to the whole thing so that we will learn. The first part of the message can animate us and make our mind’s eye blind to the second part.
In both the first and second reading God tells us He is full of mercy; overlooking people's sins; a friend to sinners.
This is the first part and impacts us. We feel free. It is good news. We want to sit back and relax and enjoy that. We feel safe. Other people can't tell us we are bad if this is true. Is it true? Yes. There is also more that is true.
The first reading and the Gospel tell us why God is so full of forgiveness and mercy. This is the part of today's good news that we can and tend to easily miss paying attention to. God is full of mercy so that we who sin can repent. God loves to see us repent; to be sorry, admitting our sins; trying to make up for our sins and stop sinning.
The Church and the priests of the Church follow this same two-step pattern. If a person skips Mass it is a great sin. The Church loves to see that person come back to Church and welcomes that person. That is stage one. Stage two is the Church loves to see in that person repentance and a real effort to make up for the times they failed to support the Church gathered in prayer by doing a better job of going to Church.
God is merciful and He is merciful because He loves to see repentance in us. We cannot "take advantage" of God's mercy. If we take His mercy for granted and abuse it; if we listen only to Him when He speaks of His mercy we are fools. Do you think God will be happy with that? Listen with delight to His mercy and then get busy about repentance. It is then that God's mercy will really shine out into the world.
In Christ,
Fr. St. Martin
