“THIS IS THE DAY THAT THE LORD HAS MADE.

LET US REJOICE AND BE GLAD”

Our Sacred Heart parish family came together in praise and thanksgiving to God during the celebration of Holy Week, Triduum and Easter. Our beautiful liturgies were made possible by the active leadership of many ministries, i.e. priest celebrants, altar servers, Eucharistic ministers, lectors, musicians, ushers. Under their leadership all parishioners were able to be actively involved. As liturgy coordinator, I am deeply grateful to all of you. May the Blessings of the Risen Lord be with us all during these Great 50 days of Easter celebration.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

It is joyous that we have finally arrived at the month of May! Isn’t it fitting that it is the month we especially honor Our Lady? All CCD classes will take time to honor her and bring her flowers and also to ask for her to bring our needs and requests to her Son, Jesus. A mother’s work is never done!

First Communion is fast approaching and will be celebrated on Sunday, May 15 at the 9AM Mass. Our students are preparing their minds and hearts to receive Our Lord under the faithful guidance of their teachers, Christine Sanroma and Mary Hoppe. Please keep them all in your prayers! Just a reminder to all parents, that it is very important that your children attend all the classes leading up to their reception of the Eucharist. Please mark your calendars for the 1st Communion rehearsal on Saturday, May 14 at 1:30pm in the upper church. At least one parent must attend.

On Tuesday, May 3rd, we welcome Fr. Dan O’Connell who will speak to our Confirmation students and their parents on the Sacrament of Confirmation. Father Dan is currently the Pastor of St. Joseph Parish in the West End/Beacon Hill section of Boston, as well as Associate Director of the Office of Worship and Spiritual Life for the Archdiocese. He is also well known for his popular television show on Catholic TV titled “We’ve got to Talk”. Fr. Dan has been speaking throughout the Archdiocese on the topic of Confirmation for over 15 years. The content of this lecture is extremely important for preparation of the Sacrament, therefore, it is required that an adult accompany our Confirmation students.

We encourage all parishioners, especially parents with children in the Religious Education program to hear this presentation. Join us Tuesday, May 3rd in the lower church from 7:00 – 8:45 PM. If you’d like to learn more about Fr. Dan go to Catholictv.com. Please keep the Confirmation students in your prayers.

EXCERPTS FROM HOLY THURSDAY HOMILY

We use many words to describe the work of Christ – our redemption, the salvation of the world. Another word is an old English word – atonement. What does it mean and what has it come from? Two folks have a quarrel, yet they solve their problem and become, as Webster’s Dictionary tells us, “at one”. Quite literally, the English word “atonement” describes the situation of several or many persons “being at one”, being in agreement, being in unity, no longer in hostility; they are now at peace. Because of this basic meaning, the word “atonement” came to mean “to make reparation” or “to bring about compensation”, to restore friendly relations, to bring about reconciliation. Do not our Jewish brothers and sisters celebrate each year a Day of Atonement? The Incarnation, the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus had as their goals to make us one in Christ, to promote and sustain the unity of the Church, to make us once again God’s children, members of Christ, temples of the Spirit and agents for the unity and the peace of men and women everywhere.

Last Sunday, we read together the Passion of Christ according to Matthew. Tomorrow, Good Friday, we will read together the Passion of Christ according to John. On our own it would be most helpful to read chapters 14 – 17 in John’s Gospel. These chapters are called the Last Supper discourses. They speak of the unity God the Father wills for his Church and for the world. I will focus only on Chapter 17. It is called the Prayer of Jesus. He prayed to his heavenly Father, he prayed for the disciples who were with him at this Last Supper and he prayed for you and me. He says to his heavenly Father, “The hour has come. Give glory to your son so that your Son may glorify you. I glorified you on earth by accomplishing the work you gave me to do. Now glorify me, Father, with the glory I had with you before the world began.” Jesus prayed also for his first disciples by saying to his heavenly Father, “I revealed your name to those whom you gave me out of the world. I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, while I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one as we are one. I do not ask that you take them out of this world, but that you keep them from the evil one. Consecrate them in the truth.”

Finally, Jesus prays for you and me as he says to his heavenly Father, “I pray not only for them, but also for those

who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they may also be one in us that the world may believe that you sent me. And I have given them the glory you gave me so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me that they may be brought to perfection as one, that the world may know that you sent me and that you love them as you love me. I made known to them your name, and I will make it known to them that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them.”

Father Connelly

THANK YOU FOR A WONDERFUL PARTY!

Thanks so much to Father Connelly, the Hospitality Committee and all those parishioners who helped with the decorations, designing, printing and mailing of the invitations, with the setup and cleanup before and after the party, all those who provided the abundant and delicious food and beverages and to all those who came and shared a wonderful Sunday afternoon with us. It was an unbelievable day – we were overwhelmed by it all. Thank you also for the lovely mirrors with the picture of the upper church at Sacred Heart. It was such a nice surprise and very much appreciated. It was a great joy to see so many people and to have a chance for a brief visit. Working in the parish office over the years was a privilege and blessing from God for us. We had the opportunity to share in your love for the parish, as well as in your joys and sorrows. We will miss that daily interaction but look forward to seeing you at Mass and at many parish functions in the years ahead.

With all our love,

Joan Troy and Carol Groden

SIGNINGS

When I was growing up I remember my parents discovered these powerful and exciting letters.  My parents were always reading and talking and had people who read and discussed things as friends.  But there were these letters that were like a little earthquake; they were different; they were more than just another pile of words going on and on.  I remember these letters had a special name:  Encyclicals!  I will never forget my father’s face as the ideas presented about war in one of those letters washed over his mind’s eye.  It was so amazing to me as a child that when I later read these same letters as an adult I found that most of the content of that letter shared with me by my father was still intact in my memory.

Well our new Pope has written new encyclicals for us.  These authoritative letters written for the whole world by the Pope in light of our present situation are a unique thing that only the Church can produce and which is itself a help to believing that the Church is true.  Where else can you find enough real unity in this world to have a significant portion of the world's population getting on the "same page" as happens in the encyclical event?

So what did he say?  Imagine it was your job to write a letter to the whole world as Pope.  What would you say?  Imagine the potential for good.  Think of all the various conflicts and problems that could be addressed through such a powerful perch.

What did he say?  In his first Encyclical he focuses us on God as love.  He asks us, the whole world, to look again with Thomas in today's Gospel at Jesus’ heart, to go in through His wounded side to contemplate the human shaped love of God in the person of the Son become man. That he affirms is the true summary of the Gospel.  It is good news for us because it is like reaffirming that we have a good name for our Church here in Newton; Sacred Heart.  God saves us by loving us with a human heart.  This Sunday is Divine Mercy Sunday and the truth of the Gospel is revealed in this title as well.  We need to be like Thomas who experiences the truth about Christ by studying Christ's wounds and in so doing finds the blood and water flowing from Christ’s pierced heart.  He finds the powerful sacraments of that love made real in the Sacraments of the Church.

The truth we have (ever new through the teaching office of the Church) helps keep our eyes on what saves and with Thomas we say again: My Lord and my God.

In Christ, Fr. St. Martin
