THE MINISTRY OF ACOLYTE AT SACRED HEART PARISH

Acolytes or altar servers fulfill a very important ministry at every weekend liturgy. Their service adds to the orderly and prayerful nature of our worship. From the practical point of view, in the words of Father Connelly, “if we didn’t have altar servers, I would need at least four more arms and hands.”

An altar server assists the priest celebrant at the altar by holding the book for opening and closing prayers, providing solemnity for the Gospel procession and Offertory procession. During the Liturgy of the Eucharist, servers set the altar table with the sacred vessels. They bring the water and wine used for the consecration, tray for washing of the hands, and ring the bells at the consecration.

Qualifications: love of God and interest in serving at the liturgy; willingness to learn more about the liturgy; ability to make a time commitment to serve when scheduled.
and to arrive at church in sufficient time; grade level of four or above.

A training period is provided and required.

Male and female are encouraged, including ADULTS. If any adults are interested, we could develop an intergenerational acolyte team. We would also like to expand the number of adult acolytes who could be available to assist at funerals.
