The Ministry Of Sacristan At Sacred Heart Parish
A sacristy is the room in a church that houses the sacred vessels, vestments and books that are used at every liturgy. Much activity emanates from here. A sacristan provides great help in the orderly preparation for Mass.
Before Mass: the sacristan prepares the vessels and books to be used, sets them out in proper location; arranges hymn books to be used by celebrant and other ministers.
After Mass: the sacristan returns all vessels to the sacristy and “purifies” the vessels that contained the Precious Body and Blood before washing/drying them to be ready for the next Mass or returned to cupboard.
Another aspect of sacristan service is cleaning and preparing the altar linens and albs(gowns) used by priests and servers. This is a periodic requirement.
We are looking to expand this ministry. It would be wonderful to have enough people to set up a schedule of sacristans to help in these areas so that the work does not become burdensome to a few.
Who can offer? Individuals or families who have a generous heart, able to make a certain time commitment and eager to serve the parish in this way.
