The Ministry Of Usher At Sacred Heart Parish
What does an usher do besides pass the collection basket?? Plenty!!
An usher arrives early to be sure that the church is ready for the liturgy: doors open, baskets out, pews clean, kneelers in down position, seasonal preparation (fans, windows, walks clear/sanded); gifts ready for the Offertory procession, and selection of individuals or a family to bring the gifts to the celebrant; enlists aid of others to take up the collection.
As people arrive, an usher is a welcoming presence to known parishioners and especially to visitors. When necessary, ushers direct people to pews so that all may be comfortably seated. During the liturgy the usher responds to the needs of people and handles any emergency that may arise.
Who may serve in this ministry? Although it is mostly men who have served as ushers in the past, female adults are allowed and encouraged. It requires a generous heart, ability to make a time commitment and interest in this type of service.
